Quieting Noisy Garage Doors

Quieting Garage DoorsFrom time to time, garage doors can make tremendous noise, enough to wake up the whole house. Assuming the overhead door is still opening and closing properly, there are several things you can do yourself to quiet down the noise.

Start by tightening the nuts with a socket wrench or an adjustable wrench. You want them snug, but be careful not to overtighten.

If that doesn’t do the trick, you might want to replace the rollers. Old metal rollers can make a racket. Your average five section garage door will require around a dozen rollers. You can pop these out and replace them yourself for just a few bucks. You might want to use nylon rather than metal rollers because they are much quieter. They do cost a little more, about $60 a set compared to $35 for metal. You can do the whole job in less than an hour.

You could also try replacing the hinges. Overtime, hinges become worn. If the hole is more oblong than round, you’ll want to replace the entire hinge.

Another potential cause of noise is your garage door trolley. If the trolley is loose or damaged then you may hear a grinding sound. This can be easy to miss, so make sure you visually inspect your trolley for any signs of damage. If there’s any damage in the trolley, contact a technician for repairs.

How to Repair a Broken Garage Door the Right Way

Whether it’s a noisy garage door or your garage door won’t open, there’s both a right and wrong way to fix an overhead door. While we’re a huge fan of the do-it-yourself (DIY) movement, it’s not always a good idea to google “how to fix a garage door” and rely on the first result you see. What if the guide isn’t right and you end up doing more harm than good?

And that’s not the only problem.

Every year, many home and business owners are injured or killed after mishandling a garage door. Make no mistake – that door is very heavy and you don’t want it to come crashing down on your head. While it may be tempting to tinker with it and try to figure out why it won’t work, it’s sometimes best to just let a professional take care of it for you.

With a professional, you don’t have to worry about voiding your warranty or injuring yourself. And you don’t have to worry about accidentally breaking something. Our technicians are insured, bonded, and certified. That way, you’re always covered when we’re working on your panel.

Leave Springs to a Professional

One garage door repair that definitely does not fall under the DIY umbrella is your garage door springs. Always leave this repair to a professional. These springs are under an incredible amount of tension and can cause serious bodily injury if suddenly released. A professional garage door service has both the experience and proper tools to do the job safely.

You should however periodically inspect your springs for any damage, fraying or rusting. If the springs are becoming warn or rusty, call us for an inspection. We offer emergency garage door repair services and would be glad to come out and take a look, anytime.

Garage Door Repair Tips 101: How to Adjust the Chain

One common garage door repair tip we’re often asked to share is how to adjust the chain on the opener. Chains usually have an adjustment linked to the chain, or an adjustment to the length of the door opener track. Adjustments to the chain are located at the master link, usually consisting of a bolt with two or three nuts. Simply loosen the locking inner nut, turning the outer nut clockwise to tighten the chain. Be careful not to overtighten. This can cause premature wear. Ideally, you should have a ½ inch sag in the center of the chain. This will provide just enough tension without wearing out the parts.
