Every house needs a facelift now and again, but we don’t all have $30000 to drop on landscaping and contract work. We do all, however, have days off work. Maybe it’d be worth it to skip the usual Saturday-afternoon Netflix binge and do a couple front yard projects instead. A little elbow grease can up your home’s curb appeal and equity without a crazy investment:
- Paint your front door an accent color and paint your garage door to coordinate. If you have a wooden garage door, it’s a great time to refinish and repaint it to keep it looking great for years to come. It’s a lot cheaper to repaint a garage door than it is to replace it!
- Add window boxes to the windows on the front of your house.
- Pressure wash your cement porch, walkway, driveway, etc. To clean your garage door, use soft and warm soapy water. Some pressure washers do actually come with a gentle enough setting to use on wood but be careful with the soap that you’re using. You’ll often be better off using a soft brush and warm soapy water.
- Update your outdoor lighting and coordinate porch/front door lighting with garage/driveway lighting. You can also take advantage of this to install motion-based lights. They’re both a nice security upgrade and convenient if you have to let the dog out at night.
- Create an inviting porch area with an outdoor rug, seating, pillows, and potted plants.
Each one of these projects can easily be done for a couple hundred dollars or less, and you’ll get that investment right back out in curb appeal and associated home equity. Maybe you’ll even inspire your neighbors to do the same!
