Garage Door Sensor Cleaning Tips

04/2/2018

cleaning the photo eye sensor on garagae doorIf your garage door won’t open, one of the first things you should check are the sensors. These laser sensors can be found on the base of the garage door opening. The sensors should be pointing directly at each other and there should be no blockages.

Sometimes, these sensors need to be wiped clean and realigned if the garage isn’t opening. When cleaning these sensors, it’s important not to use any harsh chemicals or paper towels. The lens on these sensors is delicate and can easily be scratched. If the lens becomes scratched, then you’ll need to replace the entire sensor.

In most cases, a soft microfiber cloth, like the one used to clean glasses or television screens, can be used without any cleaning liquid. If the lens is still dirty, then you can lightly moisten the cloth with water.

How Fix a Garage Door Off Track

If your garage door has come off the track, you may be able to fix it yourself, providing neither the track nor the door is too badly damaged. First detach the door opener by pulling on the large cord hanging overhead. Next, raise the door partially until one set of rollers lines up with the area that went off track. Open the track where the rollers have jumped with a pair of pliers. Guide the rollers back onto the track. Close the track by placing a block of wood on the outside edge and hammering it back into place. A wooden mallet is the best option to avoid damaging the door. Move the door up and down and see how it works.
