If you’re planning on buying a new garage door, there’s a few important things to consider. One of these things are what type of material you’d like your door to be made of. Steel, aluminum, and wood are just a few of the options available. Today, I’d like to take a look at the benefits and disadvantages of each type of material.
1) Wood
Wood doors usually come in two forms: real wood and composite wood. Wood doors can be a very attractive option, but they can also be the most expensive type of panel. These doors typically have poor insulation and require ongoing maintenance. If you don’t maintain your wood door, it could split and crack, leading to costly repairs or even the new for a new garage door.
2) Steel
Steel is one of the most popular types of panel. They’re easy to maintain and can offer a good amount of insulation depending on the thickness and if you purchase a door with added insulation. Steel doors can vary wildly in price but expect to pay between $800 to $4,000 or more.
3) Aluminum
Aluminum doors are one of the most affordable options. They’re lightweight, easy to install, and very durable. Another advantage is that they don’t rust, so they’re a great option if you live out on the coast. However, aluminum doors are extremely easy to dent. If you have kids that play basketball in your driveway or you live in areas with strong winds, you may want to choose another type of material.
4) Vinyl
Vinyl doors are very affordable and resistant to dents. They’re also lightweight and able to withstand a moderate amount of weather. The downside with vinyl is that the color can fade and it’s difficult to paint. Plus, it has poor insulation, so you may need to install some insulative backing to it.
5) Fiberglass
Like aluminum, fiberglass is another population option that is lightweight, durable, and resistant to saltwater corrosion. However, the insulation quality of fiberglass is often poor.
