Many of us like to show our excitement for the holidays by covering the front of our house with all the trappings – reindeer on the roof, colorful strung lights, front-yard greenery wrapped in lights and garlands. But when it comes to our garage door, we often hang a string of lights across the top and call it a day. But it could be a main feature of your winter design, if you know what to do.
Here are a few fun winter-themed ways to include your garage door in your home decoration:
- Make your garage door look like a big wrapped present. There are a few ways to do this: you can wrap each panel in colorful plastic table covers and add ribbon on top, or you could go more subtle and add a vertical and horizontal ribbon across your garage door with a bow in the middle.
- Order a custom holiday-themed banner for your garage door. These are flexible plastic skins for the entire garage door. They’re easy to install and don’t interfere with the function of your overhead door.
- Get a sticker kit made for garage doors. They’re easy to find on Amazon. Our favorite one makes your garage door into a snowman face. Bonus: it’s so easy, you could have the kids help with it. And when the Holidays are over, taking it down is a 2-minute job. Lazy festivity at its finest.
- Install sconces on either side of your garage doors. This is a twofold improvement, because motion-sensing lights increase your home’s security, and you can use the sconces to hang decorations from.
- If you want to go full-out – and we do mean full-out – cover the walls around and above the garage door in brown outdoor fabric and decorate it like a gingerbread house. It makes the garage door look like it’s the way in to a holiday wonderland.
It’s easy to tailor any of these garage door décor ideas to your family’s version of the Holidays. We don’t all celebrate Christmas; there’s Yule, Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Mawlid-Al-Nabi, Chinese New Year, Diwali – winter celebrations exist in every culture.
If you want your home to feel most inviting and open, consider keeping your color scheme to winter weather colors like blues, whites and silvers. See? There’s tonnes of easy ways to make your garage door a feature of your outdoor holiday decorations. Go ahead; get started!
