No — it’s not your imagination. Hurricanes are getting worse every year. Climate change is no joke, nor is it a hoax. We’re getting 100 year storms, every single year.
So when you’re planning that new garage door installation, hurricane season should be on your mind. You need a highly fortified door that can take the best Mother Nature has to throw up against it, seriously.
Fortifying an Existing Garage Door
And even if you don’t opt for a brand new garage door this year, there is plenty you can do to your existing garage door to help it survive the next hurricane. For one thing, you can install a garage door bracing kit. This includes braces and hardware for about $500, not counting installation. We’d be happy to install it for you!
You’ll also want to make sure the track of your garage door is at least 14-gauge weight. Look for markings on the track that tell you the gauge. Check to see the track is securely screwed into place. Replace any loose screws with longer screws. This is a good idea even outside of hurricane season — it prevents your garage door from going off track.
Purchase a New Hurricane Resistant Garage Door
You can also purchase a garage door that is specifically designed to withstand hurricanes. These doors are made out of highly fortified steel and can withstand winds of up to 130 mph. These doors are designed to withstand the force of objects being hurled against them. Most have a steel or fiberglass veneer. These doors also have an extra-strong steel track system and twist-resistant framework.
