Whether you live in a flood zone or in a location with rainy seasons like Sacramento or Seattle, water intrusion is a constant worry. Water damage to your home or garage can end up costing thousands of dollars in damages and repairs, not to mention the inconvenience of wet floors and replacing ruined belongings. So here’s a few things you can do to make sure your garage and garage door aren’t weak spots in your home’s ability to stave off water.
Things You Can Do to Make Your Garage Flood-Proof and Worry-Free
- Take everything out of your garage so you can inspect every nook and cranny.
- If you find any cracks or places where water has gotten in before, make repairs with products like Drylok and vinyl concrete patching. You can also use a process called cementitious tanking.
- Paint your whole garage with waterproof paint. All of it, even the ceiling.
- Clean and acid-strip the concrete floor and coat it in a waterproof epoxy. Obviously, make sure it’s dry before you do this.
- Check your garage door’s weather stripping and replace it if necessary.
- When you put everything back in your garage, consider metal shelving units and/or storing your belongings in lidded plastic tubs, just in case.
- Repeat this process each year to keep your garage as waterproof as possible.
