It happens all the time. Right now, somewhere, someone just shouted an expletive after trying to pull out of their garage while the garage door was still down. As such a common issue, it’s something we’re always ready for – it’s one of our most frequent emergency calls. But before you call us, there are a few steps to take so you don’t make the situation worse and run up your door repair costs.
1. Remove the car from the garage door… obviously.
2. Leave the door closed. You might think it’s fine to try the opener remote. Don’t do it.
3. Assess the damage. Check for dented panels, cracks, if the door is off track, if rails came out of the wall, etc. Make a note of everything; you’ll need it soon.
4. *Only do this step if the tracks are okay, secured, and the rollers are in the track.* Disconnect the trolley from the garage door opener and try to operate the door manually. If it’s at all difficult or noisy, stop and leave it closed.
5. Give us a call, literally any time. We offer 24/7 emergency service for just this kind of thing. We’ll be right out to diagnose the issue and give you options on how to proceed.
After you have your garage door fixed, keep all your documentation and take a look at your homeowner’s insurance policy. Often, there are clauses for silly accidents like these, and so long as it was someone who lived in the house that ran the car into it, you might be able to get the cost of the repair covered!
