Some garage door parts fly under our radar when we are choosing a garage door opener for our new garage door. Some openers have chain drives, while others have belt drives. Both are the pulling mechanism used to keep the garage door on track. There are definitely pros and cons to each, but it seems the tide is trending towards belt drives. Here’s why:
The Pros and Cons of Chain Drives
Chain drives are the most economical option, and a typical garage door setup usually comes with a chain drive since they’re affordable and easy to get. Chain drives also tend to be stronger than belt drives, making them a better choice for larger, heavier garage doors. The downsides to chain drives, though, is that they’re noisy, they need readjusted every so often, and because of all the metal-on-metal friction with the garage door trolley, chain drives don’t have great longevity. But, since they’re not expensive, replacement isn’t a huge deal.
The Pros and Cons of Belt Drives
Belt drives are definitely the more expensive option. And they tend not to be able to lift as much weight as chain drives can. However, because they last longer because their interaction with the garage door trolley doesn’t affect them the way it does chain drives. That, and they are faster moving and way quieter than chain drives.
