Insulating your garage door is never a bad idea. In any kind of climate, an insulated garage door keeps the outside environment separate from the inside, and stops energy loss from your home’s HVAC system. If you’re designing a new garage door, having it made with insulation is an easy feature addition. But if you have an uninsulated garage door you don’t want to have to replace, no worries – there are kits you can buy to insulate your garage door yourself! Or you can have us do it; it’s kind of one of our specialties.
Here’s a rundown of your insulation choices for home garage doors:
- Rigid Foam: lightweight, thin, affordable
- Spray foam: expensive, high energy-efficiency, mold and pest resistant
- Fiberglass: Most common type of garage door insulation, inexpensive and easy to install but heavy
- Radiant Barriers: not technically insulation, but very inexpensive, reflects heat away from the door
- Cellulose: natural materials, similar properties to fiberglass
It’s always a good idea to consult with a professional in exterior and garage door installation, repair and maintenance, as they’ll be able to give you the best advice on insulation based on weight, R-value, cost, and any other factors that might affect your choice.
